Embryo Development: What to Expect at Your 5 Week Ultrasound
At 4.5 weeks of pregnancy, a vaginal ultrasound will typically show very early signs of pregnancy, but it might be too early to visualize a distinct embryo or fetal structures. What you might see is a small gestational sac, which could appear as a small, circular or oval-shaped structure. It's often described as a "gestational sac with a yolk sac." This early in pregnancy, it's unlikely to see a definitive embryo or heartbeat yet.

The gestational sac is where the embryo will eventually develop. At this stage, it may indeed look like a ring shape, but it's essential to remember that it's still very early, and what's visible might be limited. It's also not uncommon for the sac to appear to have no visible contents or a discernible middle, as the embryo is still in the very early stages of development and might not be visible yet.

While you're laying comfortably on our Tempur-Pedic scanning bed, a technician will apply heated gel to your belly that helps carry sound waves to make the image clearer. Then, the technician will pass a probe over your belly that will bounce sound waves (inaudible to human ears) off your internal tissue. Your baby's image will be displayed on our 110" screen for your viewing. There may be times when we ask you to sit still or hold your breath in order to get the highest quality images, but in general, we are less clinical and more focused on the fun parts of an ultrasound. We book our appointments for more than enough time, so everyone feels relaxed and not rushed. Receive all of your images and a recording sent directly to your phone or live stream your ultrasound for family and friends from afar. If baby is shy for their 3D/4D/HD scan, we may have you come back for a free scan within two weeks.
